About Daily Guess

Daily Guess is a small set of free daily guessing games: Swissdle, Cantondle, CH-Soccerdle and Pilldle. Each has one puzzle a day, takes a few minutes, needs no account and runs in the browser on a phone or a computer. Most of them are about Switzerland and can be played in German, French, Italian and English.

Who runs it

Daily Guess is made and run by Ivo Krämer in Switzerland. Post reaches him at c/o JL Consulting Group GmbH#1695, Zürcherstrasse 84, 8852 Altendorf, Switzerland, a mail address service; the legal details are in the impressum. The site is meant to pay for itself with advertising from Google AdSense. The Swiss games also have a voluntary TWINT link for anyone who wants to support them. There is no paid version and nothing in the games is locked.

How the answer of the day is picked

Every game has a fixed list of possible answers for each mode, for example the 200 largest Gemeinden in Swissdle's Normal mode or the 26 cantons in Cantondle. The server works out the day's answer from the date in Zurich and a secret number that was set once before the game's first day and is never changed. Nobody picks answers by hand, and nobody can make a day easier or harder after the fact.

A new puzzle starts at midnight Zurich time, and everyone playing the same mode gets the same answer, which is what makes comparing results fair. Swissdle, Pilldle and CH-Soccerdle go through the whole list of a mode before any answer comes back. Cantondle never repeats a canton within nine days, and its three answers of a day always lie in three different cantons.

Where the data comes from

Official sources come first. Swissdle and Cantondle use the commune register and the population statistics (STATPOP) of the Federal Statistical Office, and swisstopo's postcodes, heights and boundaries. Pilldle starts from Swissmedic's list of authorised medicines and adds Wikidata, openFDA and Wikipedia page views. CH-Soccerdle is built from the Wikipedia season pages, the Swiss Football League, RSSSF and similar football records.

Where two sources overlap, they are compared. Swissdle only takes an altitude from Wikidata if it lies within 120 m of swisstopo's measurement at the village centre; otherwise the measurement wins. CH-Soccerdle's clubs and players went through a second fact check on launch day, which corrected a few values. Each guide on this site names its sources and the date the data was taken.

Data never changes under a running game. When a list is updated, for example after Gemeinde mergers on 1 January or when new population figures come out, the new version only applies from a future midnight. Every earlier day keeps the answer it had.

Your data

Your guesses, statistics and streak are stored in your own browser. The server receives your guesses and an anonymous player ID, to check answers and to count how many people play; no IP address is stored. The details are in the privacy policy.

Found a mistake? Contact

Wrong numbers, clumsy translations and ideas for new games are all welcome. Write to hello@dailyguess.org (send an email). It helps to say which game and mode, the date or puzzle number, what looks wrong, and a source if you have one. Confirmed corrections go in from a future midnight, like every other data change.
